What is the New York paycheck calculator?
The New York paycheck calculator is a tool that turns gross pay into take-home pay for someone who works in New York. New York State taxes wages at graduated rates from 3.9% to 10.9%. New York City residents pay a second income tax of 2.05% to 4.25%, Yonkers residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their state tax, and every paycheck has small disability and Paid Family Leave deductions.
The federal lines use the 2026 method in IRS Publication 15-T. The New York line follows the Department of Taxation and Finance's 2026 exact calculation method (NYS-50-T), step by step, and the working is shown under the result. To see how New York compares with other states, see income tax by state.

The calculator works out the state line with the guide's exact calculation, Method II. Payroll systems that use the printed wage-bracket tables can differ by a few cents.
New York City and Yonkers taxes are for residents. Someone who lives in New Jersey or Long Island and works in Manhattan pays New York State tax but no New York City tax.
How New York withholding is worked out
Publication NYS-50-T-NYS for 2026 gives wage-bracket tables and an exact calculation. For each paycheck:
- Subtract the deduction allowance for the filing status (every two weeks $284.60 single, $305.80 married) and $38.50 for each allowance on Form IT-2104.
- Multiply by the number of pay periods in the year.
- Find the tax in the annual schedule: 3.9% on the first $8,500, rising through the brackets of the guide.
- Divide by the number of pay periods, then add the extra amount from line 3.
At very high pay the guide switches to Method III, a single rate on all net wages: 10.45% once yearly net wages reach $1,077,550 for single filers. A traditional 401(k) contribution and a cafeteria-plan health premium are left out of New York wages, as they are federally.
Checked against the state's own examples
The guide's married example pays $5,000 twice a month with three allowances. Net wages are $4,543.80 and the guide withholds $248.11; this calculator gives $248.12. The New York City example for a single filer with one allowance on the same pay withholds $188.80; the calculator gives $188.79.
New York Form IT-2104
Form IT-2104, the Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate, covers New York State, New York City and Yonkers on one form.
| Line or box | What to enter | Effect on withholding |
|---|---|---|
| Filing status | Single or head of household; married; or married but withhold at the higher single rate | Chooses the single or married deduction and schedule |
| Resident boxes | Whether you live in New York City or Yonkers | Adds the city tax or the Yonkers surcharge |
| 1 | Allowances for New York State and Yonkers, from the worksheet | Each lowers wages by $38.50 every two weeks |
| 2 | Allowances for New York City | Used only for the city tax |
| 3 to 5 | Extra amounts per paycheck for the state, the city and Yonkers | Added to every paycheck |
Without an IT-2104, an employer that has a 2020-or-later federal W-4 may withhold with zero allowances. If the employee's federal W-4 is from 2019 or earlier, the employer may use the same allowances as that W-4.
New York take-home pay by salary
The table shows 2026 take-home pay in New York for a single filer paid every two weeks, with zero allowances on Form IT-2104 and no New York City or Yonkers tax, and no pre-tax deductions.
| Salary | Federal income tax | Social Security and Medicare | New York State tax, DBL and Paid Family Leave | Take-home pay per year | Per paycheck (every two weeks) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $1,420 | $2,295 | $1,216 | $25,069 | $964.19 |
| $50,000 | $3,820 | $3,825 | $2,383 | $39,972 | $1,537.41 |
| $75,000 | $7,670 | $5,738 | $3,841 | $57,752 | $2,221.23 |
| $85,820 | $10,050 | $6,565 | $4,472 | $64,733 | $2,489.72 |
| $100,000 | $13,170 | $7,650 | $5,338 | $73,842 | $2,839.28 |
| $150,000 | $24,734 | $11,475 | $8,980 | $104,811 | $4,022.10 |
The $85,820 row is New York's median household income in the U.S. Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey. A single filer paid that salary takes home $64,733 a year, or $2,489.72 every two weeks, after $4,472 in New York taxes.
New York take-home pay by hourly wage
The table shows a 40-hour week for a single filer paid weekly, with zero allowances on Form IT-2104 and no New York City or Yonkers tax. The first row is the New York minimum wage of $16.00 an hour.
| Hourly wage | Gross pay per week (40 hours) | Federal taxes per week | New York taxes per week | Take-home pay per week | Take-home pay per year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $16.00 | $640.00 | $83.84 | $27.06 | $529.10 | $27,513 |
| $17.00 | $680.00 | $91.70 | $29.40 | $558.90 | $29,063 |
| $20.00 | $800.00 | $115.28 | $36.40 | $648.32 | $33,713 |
| $25.00 | $1,000.00 | $154.58 | $48.06 | $797.36 | $41,463 |
| $30.00 | $1,200.00 | $193.88 | $59.72 | $946.40 | $49,213 |
| $40.00 | $1,600.00 | $304.59 | $83.05 | $1,212.36 | $63,043 |
At $16.00 an hour, a 40-hour week pays $640.00 before tax and $529.10 after federal and New York taxes.
New York City and Yonkers income tax
Residents of the five boroughs pay New York City tax on all their wages, wherever they work. Withholding uses the same steps as the state with the city's own deduction (every two weeks $192.30 single) and rates from 2.05% to 4.25%. The city tables were not revised for 2026.
Yonkers residents pay 16.75% of their New York State withholding. On the guide's example of $400 a week, single with three allowances, state tax of $8.01 adds $1.34 for Yonkers. People who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a 0.5% earnings tax instead, which the calculator does not add.
Disability and Paid Family Leave deductions
New York's disability benefits law lets employers take 0.5% of wages from employees, but no more than $0.60 a week. The employer pays the rest of the cost and may choose to take nothing.
Paid Family Leave is paid by employees: 0.432% of gross wages in 2026, up to $411.91 for the year. The calculator stops the deduction at that amount when you enter the wages paid so far this year. The 2026 maximum weekly benefit is $1,228.53.
